This is the last month that these statistics will be kept. A special thank you should be extended to Echo Farm Racing for compilation of the information from the official racing charts for publication on FlyingFilly.

It is important to keep in mind that the purpose of these records is not to point the finger at any track or individual for injuries or fatalities that occur in the course of horse racing. Other sites have now begun to compile these statistics. It is a concern that the statistics may be misinterpreted or used as a way to reflect negative implications or point the finger of blame. Breakdowns and injuries are the result of many factors, not a single cause. No track goes into the race meeting with the flagrant and uncaring intention or disregard to injury. Injuries can and do occur for a number of reasons. It can be as simple as the bad step (evidence any athlete who turns an ankle and imagine the turn at high speed carrying a body of approximately 1000 pounds). It can be a combination of previous injuries, a surface that can be improved, medication which masks pain, or many other factors. There is no single reason that can be given for injuries. It is a sad fact that injuries have and will always occur, as they do in any sport. Our job is to make improvements, and that can only be accomplished by working together in a positive way without accusation or innuendo.

Great efforts have been undertaken by the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation, Inc., in cooperation with participating tracks, to gather detailed information on injuries with the On-Track Reporting System. The Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit includes a number of studies for the benefit of horses. Gathering the complete data is the only way to understand the problem. Anyone may join the Grayson Jockey Club to become part of the solution.

Focus on the positive.

Rather than looking for what is wrong and accusing without all of the facts, look for the solutions.

Statistics cover Thoroughbreds in the current month.

Information based on chart from race. Only Thoroughbred races on the flat are included.

There is only one entry per reported horse. If a horse broke down or fell, it is not also included in the "vanned off" column. If a horse is noted as "vanned off" it was not noted in the chart that it either broke down or fell. Those included under the "pulled up" column indicate no further information regarding injury or lack thereof. Those horses that were noted as "eased" are not included as it may not have been injury related. The numbers do not show duplicate categories for the same horse. They do not reflect any unreported incidents or injuries during workouts. Taking into consideration the number of horses that actually start, injuries and breakdowns are a small percentage. Factors other than track surface enter into injuries. There is no single determination of cause for injuries, as circumstances vary in each case and could be attributed to a single or combination of factors.

Beginning with August 2007, individual horse report by incident includes date, name of horse, level of race, and charted incident listed in last track column.
